Troubleshooting Your CD
The most common cause of your diapers leaking are improper fit, repelling and over saturated diapers.
First check to see where the leak is coming from, if the diaper is completely soaked, you know you're problem and it's time to change your diaper or insert. If your baby is soaking through diapers quite quickly or he/she are heavy wetter baby, you made to add in a doubler or another absorbent insert.
If the diaper is leaking, but not fully saturated, check to see if you have an improper fit. If the leak is around the leg area, make sure there no gaps and try to get as snug a fit as possible, without it being tight. Try adjusting the diaper to a different size or checking the insert. If the insert is not flat it could be creating a pocket area for pee to seep into and leak out of.
If you've got a good fit and you're still leaking, the most likely problem is that your diaper is repelling instead of absorbing. The causes of repelling could be from diaper cream residue or detergent build up. For either of these causes, there are a few remedies you can try:
If you have been using diaper cream on your baby, without the protection of a flush-able liner, your diapers will have build up. To get rid of this, it's a pretty easy fix. You will have to "strip" your diapers.
If you haven't been using diaper cream, the culprit of repelling is probably detergent build up. This too easily solved. Just try "stripping" your diapers. If that doesn't help, you may need to try washing them with 1/2 cup baking soda, 1/2 cup vinegar in the first wash, rinse with 1/2 cup vinegar on second cycle, and finally rinse with hot water on the last cycle. Dry in dryer. Repeat this up to two times. Only try this method for extreme detergent build up, it won't harm your diapers, but you don't want to make yourself more work than is necessary.
Stripping your diapers
First wash your cloth diapers as your normally would. You want to strip them when they are clean, so as not to cause permanent stains.
Then run your diapers through a hot rinse with no detergent. If you have a lot of build up, try adding a drop or two (literally a drop is all you need) of Dawn dish soap to the load. If you're diapers are very odorous you can also add a bit of baking soda to absorb the odors.
Do a second rinse after the first wash, but add 1/2 a cup of vinegar to the load which will ensure all residue is removed.
After that keep running your diapers through the rinse cycle with warm water until no more suds appear in the washing machine or on the diapers. This could take up to 3 or 4 times.
Finally, dry your diapers in the dryer, or hang them outside to dry on a sunny day. Remember, the sun is best all natural stain remover and germ killer.
Other common problems and solutions:
Odors
It happens to everyone, you just did laundry and you go to change your babies bottom, and you open it up and you get a strong pungent smell, but it's not from a poopy diaper. It's just pee. If you're diapers smell of ammonia, or have any other strong unpleasant smell, it is most likely caused by a detergent build up. To get rid of the smell, you are going to have to strip your diapers. (see above)
Staining
When dealing with baby poo, staining is inevitable. Staining won't affect how you're diapers work, but lots of parents don't like how it looks. Some good ways to prevent staining are to rinse your diapers in the toilet before washing, just swish them around with a stir stick. Try not to wash them in hot water right away, or you risk baking the stains into the fabric. If you have stains and want to get rid of them, hang your diapers to dry outside on a bright sunny day. Sunlight is the cheapest and most effective way to brighten your diapers.
Caring for your hemp diapers
Hemp is a wonderful fabric for diapers, and is one of the greenest choices you can make. There ares some special care procedure you need to make sure you do to allow them a long life.
Before using your hemp diapers make sure you pre-wash them at twice. Hemp will not reach it's maximum absorbency until the 8-10th wash, but you can start using them before then. When you are pre-washing any diapers, make sure to pre-wash the hemp ones separately because the natural oils in hemp can coat your other diapers. Some people claim that hemp is smellier after use, but if you follow the directions here, and the simple washing instructions listed on our site, you'll find that they aren't any more smelly than any other fabric and are a great diaper to have in your diaper bag.
